The first three in a series of 12 Hemingway classics have been released, including THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA, A FAREWELL TO ARMS, and FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS. For many first time novelists the task of writing a novel is complex enough. Now consider a plot that moves back and forth in time from modern day to the siege of Leningrad and a protagonist who struggles with Alzheimer's disease.
"I wrote it in little pieces and pieced them together," described Debra Dean, author of The Madonnas of Leningrad. This compelling story was published in March by William Morrow/HarperCollins and was selected as both a Borders Original Voice and the #1 Booksense Pick for April. Full story. . .

An Exclusive Authorlink InterviewWith Blake Nelsonby Susan Van Hecke

July 2006
BEGINNER'S LUCK IS REAL.
That's the simple advice Blake Nelson gives to fledgling authors on his website, www.blakenelsonbooks.com.
And he should know. After bailing out of law school and rattling around New York City and San Francisco writing and performing poetry, Nelson eventually made his way back to his native Portland, Oregon. There, he wrote his first young adult novel, Girl, in 1993. Simon & Schuster picked up the unsentimental coming-of-age story in 1994; Hollywood put it on the big screen in 1999, starring Dominique Swain, Sean Patrick Flannery and . . . Full story. . .

Doubt Makes You A Better Writer

An exclusive Authorlink Interview
With First-time Novelist Dana Reinhardt

by Ellen Birkett Morris

June 2006

Dana Reinhardt began writing as a student, but never considered writing a viable career option until her debut novel was bid on by four publishing houses, earning her a healthy advance and a two-book contract.

The young adult novel, A BRIEF CHAPTER IN MY IMPOSSIBLE LIFE, was recently published by Wendy Lamb Books, an imprint of Random House Inc. The story centers on Simone, a sixteen year old, who meets her adoptive mother, a Hasidic Jew, for the first time. Readers accompany Reinhardt’s compelling protagonist on her journey of self-exploration as she discovers and embraces her roots.

“The seed of the novel came from wanting to write a story about Jewish identity that was not centered on the Holocaust. I wondered how a normal 16 year old kid would confront these kinds of questions and the adoption story was one way to explore this,” said Reinhardt. GO TO AUTHORLINK.COM FOR THE FULL STORY.

Writing for Educational
Publishers: A Great Opportunity
for Authors

An Exclusive Authorlink Interview
With Laura Purdie Salas
Educational Writer

by Susan VanHecke

June 2006

While most aspiring writers dream of the deal that will land their books in Barnes & Noble, they may be overlooking a market that fills school and public library bookshelves across the country. Writing for educational publishers offers plenty of opportunities for authors honing their craft, and can be a nice financial and creative supplement while waiting for that big break from a mainstream trade publisher, says Laura Purdie Salas. Salas has penned close to 20 non-fiction titles for educational publishers, on subjects ranging from Isaac Newton to snowmobiling, as well as fiction and poetry for children's magazines, educational publishers, and standardized testing services. In August, she'll be a featured speaker at the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators' 35th annual summer conference in Los Angeles. GO TO AUTHORLINK.COM FOR THE FULL STORY.

The Importance

Connections With Others

An exclusive Authorlink interview
with Pay It Forward Author
Catherine Ryan Hyde
on her latest books,
Love in the Present Tense
and Becoming Chloe (Flying
Dolphin/Doubleday
& Knopf, 2006)

by Lisa Lenard-Cook

June 2006

Catherine Ryan Hyde and I grew up less than a mile apart in Buffalo, New York, but we didn't meet until years later, at a writer's conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A few years after that, we established our Mutual Admiration Society. All writers should be so lucky as to have a fan like Ryan Hyde.

Ryan Hyde's best-known book, Pay It Forward, sealed her reputation, but she had a well-established literary oeuvre before the book (and the film) hit the jackpot, including the short story collection Earthquake Weather and the novels Walter's Purple Heart, Funerals for Horses, and Electric God. Editors, Close Up
A Closer Look at Mark Tavani
New Senior Editor for Mortalis a Random House Imprint

An Exclusive Authorlink Interview

June 2006

Mark Tavani has seldom been bored in all of his “almost 30-something” years.

He worked as a beer distributor and a forestry aid before coaxing a degree in creative writing from the University of Pittsburgh. Unusual challenges seem to find him—instead of the other way around. Mark’s newest adventure is as senior editor of the new Mortalis imprint at Random House. There, with the help of editor, Judith Sternlight, he will oversee a whole new line of historical and international thrillers and mysteries which mirror his own passion for intriguing, well-crafted tales. The Art of Fiction
Naked Dreams: Why Writers Don't Write
by Lisa Lenard-Cook

June 2006

What do you do instead of write? Do your countertops shine while your keyboard gathers dust? Are you this year's reigning Free Cell champion or the best list-maker both east and west of the Mississippi?

Sure, you promised yourself that once you had time, you were going to write that book that's been stewing in your head ever since you can remember. So how come, now that you do have the time, you're going shopping, paying bills, polishing your silver, oiling your lawn mower—anything, in other words, except sitting down and writing? On Screen Writing
From Zero to Hero
A monthly screen writing column
by Neil Flowers

June 2006

The movie, Collateral is the best contemporary studio thriller--a drama of ideas coupled with a love story. It is not mostly a shoot-'em-up, blow-em-up like Die Hard, which is a film with too much action, not enough brain. A close examination of the characters reveals the setup for a life-changing series of events for our hero. Collateral 's success begins with Stuart Beattie's script, a model for the integration of action and character. The protagonist is Max the cabbie (Jamie Foxx), a. smart guy, a dreamer, a nice guy. Also a mama's boy and a self-deluding liar (protagonists must have flaws!). GO TO AUTHORLINK.COM FOR THE FULL STORY.
